By now we have all seen those blue tinted headlights while driving around at night. But why do some cars have these? Well turns out that some manufacturers are using a new technology to create headlamps that are easier on our eyes and more efficient. Xenon gas is used to intensify the light made by electricity jumping between two electrodes in the unit. These headlights tend to last two to three times longer and have a more uniform light pattern, with no fading like conventional headlights.
The blue-white color is easier on the eyes which makes night driving safer and less tiring. The headlights also emit ultraviolet light which helps the street signs reflect more, both of these features make it easier to see in poor weather conditions.
These headlights are more space efficient, and use less current even though they operate on a higher voltage which makes them an engineer’s and designer’s friends. Hopefully these will lead to them being in more cars in the future!
